Why our children's future depends on libraries, books, and imagination
Patty Costello, PhD in Neuroscience and children's book author will present an engaging lecture based on the latest psychological and neuroscientific research on libraries and books as teaching tools for children. The first part of the lecture discusses how and why parents can create an enriched literacy environment for their children. Other topics include a discussion on the pros and cons of teaching kids about race and inter-group bias. This is followed by a lesson on implicit bias – what it is and how it can be studied. A deeper dive into appropriate books for teaching lessons to children is then presented. The lecture concludes with an overview on the future of children’s literature and why an active imagination is an important component for raising your children to be citizens of the world.
